Crafting Protocols: Selection and Fitting Issues for Older Adults |
| |
by Terry S. Griffing, MS |
| |
Hearing care professionals should be prepared to modify their procedures to include longer appointments and, more importantly, greater sensitivity for the needs of older adult patients. Here are some considerations dealing with instrument style, technology choices, lifestyle profiles, and delivery protocols. |

From Horsepower to Hearpower, Part 2: Amplification for Clarity and Hearing Preservation |
| |
by H. Christopher Schweitzer, PhD, and Desmond A. Smith |
| |
A discussion of the physical processes involved in our amazing range of hearing, from soft to loud. Additionally, an explanation of how temporal integration—as implemented in a new amplification approach designed to exploit psychoacoustics—provides for hearing protection and intelligibility enhancement. |

A New Compression Strategy Based on a Guided Level Estimator |
| |
by Christian Stender Simonsen, MScEE, and Thomas Behrens, MScEE |
| |
A new compression strategy combines linear and non-linear amplification in new ways. In steady acoustic environments, the compressor operates in a nearly linear manner; however, if the level of the acoustic environment changes more than a given amount, the gain swiftly follows. The system is designed to allow for a high global compression ratio, while maintaining near-linear performance for locally stable environments. |
