Legislative and Industry Perspective on the Hearing Aid Assistance Tax Credit

"In order to represent the hearing aid consumer in this country, as well as our manufacturer base [in HIA], we really should delineate an agenda that is positive for the people we try to serve. As a result of that, we've made a conscious effort to try to determine what we can go to Congress with so that we stay on their radar in good times, as well as in times when there is an issue that affects us all that we must react to." — Jerry Ruzicka

What's the best way to get the attention of a US Representative or Senator? Jerry Ruzicka, chair of the Hearing Industries Association (HIA) and president of Starkey Laboratories, relates his experiences and offers advice about personal visits with legislators—particularly how he brought in signed petitions to Minnesota Congressmen that demonstrated support for the Hearing Aid Tax Credit bill. He describes the evolution of HIA from an organization that has traditionally reacted to government interference in the industry, to an organization that is now actively seeking out legislators and administrators, building bridges, and supporting hearing-related legislation that will help consumers. Ruzicka also addresses what goes into the cost of hearing aids, as well as HIA's latest research on the "Consumers' Journey" that focuses on the essential elements that make for satisfied hearing aid users.
