According to the US FDA, consumers who suspect hearing loss should not be tempted by advertisements for hearing aids and personal sound amplification devices delivered by mail. It says using these products is a risky choice because it could delay the diagnosis of a treatable or serious ear condition and lead to further hearing loss or other complications.

The agency’s consumer update provides additional information about the risks and safer alternatives. The FDA is charged with protecting the public health by assuring the safety, effectiveness, and security of human and veterinary drugs, vaccines and other biological products for human use and medical devices. The agency also is responsible for the safety and security of our nation’s food supply, cosmetics, dietary supplements, products that give off electronic radiation and for regulating tobacco products.
