The Zon hearing aid from Starkey Laboratories Inc, Eden Prairie, Minn, has won the 2008 People’s Design Award presented by the Smithsonian’s Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum.

Zon, the best-in-class receiver-in-canal line of products introduced this year, was among hundreds of nominations for which thousands of votes were cast on Cooper-Hewitt’s Web site. The field of competitors included Adidas, Blackberry, Converse, and the Beijing National Stadium.

Built from moisture-resistant material, the device minimizes the number of touchpoints on wearers’ skin with a curved shape, and its color palette complements and matches natural skin tones and hair. BluWave Signal Processing virtually eliminates feedback with active feedback intercept and the device offers directional speech detector with free-field and KEMAR DIs and a low operational noise floor.

Hearing care professionals can quickly conduct real-ear measurements with integrated real ear measurement, which provides the most precise fit possible.

The award is presented by Cooper-Hewitt as part of the organization’s national design awards that take place during national design week, a public education initiative. Nominees for the award included everything from everyday items and classic design to architecture and socially responsible creations.
