Durham, NC — MED-EL Hearing Solutions is offering 125,000 euro research grants to support hearing loss and hearing restoration research. Applications must be received by March 31, 2011.

Over the past 20 years, MED-EL has supported scientific and technological hearing implant research through its own development activities.

In recognition of its history of hearing loss research and hearing restoration research, the company is offering these grants “to support research in the basic sciences related to hearing loss and the restoration of hearing and to increase the understanding of the principles of hearing and hearing impairment.”

The grants are available to research groups and individuals in universities and other nonprofit research institutions worldwide. Each applicant may submit more than one project proposal, and more than one project proposal may be granted per applicant.

Suggested research areas may include:

  • Psychoacoustic and electrophysiologic studies to better understand the development of functional hearing;
  • Neurophysiological bases of variations in the outcome of the treatment of hearing impairment (peripheral, central); or
  • Cellular and molecular biology to better understand the etiology of hearing impairments (eg, sudden hearing loss, progressive hearing loss, presbycusis).
