The National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD), Washington, will be updating its Strategic Plan for Fiscal Years 2012 to 2016.

The plan represents the most promising cross-cutting research areas within NIDCD’s mission; it presents a series of goals and objectives that serve as a guide in prioritizing the Institute’s research investment, and helps the Institute to remain current with the state of the science in human communication research.

The NIDCD’s time-sensitive Request for Information (RFI) aims to solicit information that will help in updating the plan. Specifically, the agency is seeking feedback on the following questions:

  • What are the most significant scientific discoveries in the communication sciences that have occurred in the past decade? (Please provide references to scientific journal articles, if applicable.)
  • What are the gaps in current research and training in the communication sciences?
  • What pressing needs of individuals with communication disorders can be helped with additional research?
  • What are the greatest challenges or barriers to progress in the communication sciences?
