On September 15, 2015, The Wall Street Journal reported that President Barack Obama plans to nominate cardiologist and medical researcher Robert Califf, MD, as the next commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). According to the WSJ article, Califf had been appointed FDA Deputy Commissioner for Medical Products and Tobacco in February 2015, and since then it has been expected that he would be nominated for the lead commissioner position.
Dr Califf, a prominent leader in medicine who has led numerous clinical and research studies, is expected to be confirmed to the post by the Senate. In fact, Dr Califf had been considered for the post six years ago when President Obama selected Dr Margaret Hamburg for the commissioner position. As previously reported in The Hearing Review, Dr Hamburg resigned from her FDA post in March 2015. Since that time, Stephen Ostroff, MD, has been the FDA’s acting commissioner.
