Welch Allyn, Skaneateles Falls, NY, introduces light-emitting diode (LED) replacement lamps  for its most popular otoscopes and ophthalmoscopes.

The LED replacement lamps are tested to 30 times longer life than traditional halogen lamps and enable three times the examination time per single charge when used with Welch Allyn rechargeable handles, according to the company. The LED lamp technology preserves the familiar feel of halogen lamps while virtually eliminating the need for replacement.

The efficiency of LED lamps also results in lower temperature output, which may increase comfort for the patient and the caregiver.

The LED removes the nuisance of having to deal with burned out lamps when trying to complete a physical exam, notes Cindy Kuiper, director of physical exam products North America. The technology allows the color of the light to remain the same even as the light intensity is dimmed.

The replaceable LED lamps will be available for use with traditional otoscopes and MacroView otoscopes. LED lamps are available as simple upgrade kits, providing a lamp, lamp removal tool, and step-by-step instructions for replacement in a matter of seconds.
