US hearing aid sales increased nominally by 0.8% to 4.77 million units in 2022, compared to the post-pandemic year of 2021, when sales surged by 37%, according to the Hearing Industries Association (HIA).

After a noticeable drop of hearing aid sales in the year 2020, global annual sales rebounded, in 2021, according to an announcement from the European Hearing Instrument Manufacturers Association (EHIMA). In the last year, the members of EHIMA sold 18.79 million hearing aids in total. Compared to the previous year, sales figures increased by a full 33%, according to EHIMA. This marks a return to the growth path seen before 2020.

In the first quarter of 2022, hearing aid unit sales increased by 18.4% at the VA and by 5.7% for the private-practice and commercial market. In total, hearing aid sales increased by 7.8% compared to the same period last year when the market first started posting positive sales numbers following the Covid-19 pandemic.

The US hearing aid market rebounded from a net unit loss of -18% in 2020, which was induced by the pandemic, to a unit increase of 37% in 2021—essentially making what would appear to be a full recovery. In fact, hearing aid sales in 2021 ended up an impressive 12% above pre-pandemic 2019 levels. Total US hearing aid net unit sales—while still down by -6.2% in the third quarter —made what can be considered a very strong rebound from the -58.6% thumping experienced from April-June (Q2) due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
