Study Revisits How Sign Language Affects Cognitive Development in Deaf Children

Researchers at the University of Connecticut are reexamining the debate as to whether deaf children should learn sign language to maximize their potential for optimal development. Previous research has shown that children born deaf frequently exhibit learning deficits. Yet, research has also found that deaf children exposed to sign language from birth develop language, cognition, and literacy on normal timetables.
