Researchers Identify New Genes Linked with Hearing Loss

The findings, published in the “American Journal of Human Genetics,” cast doubt on the understanding that age-related hearing impairment originates mainly from sensory hair cells and propose the stria vascularis, a part of the cochlea in the ear, as a new target for treatments to help people with hearing loss.

Researchers Identify 38 New Mouse Genes Related to Hearing Loss

To identify new molecules involved in hearing loss, the researchers took a genetic approach and created 1,211 new mouse mutants. They screened each of these mice using a sensitive electrophysiological test, the auditory brainstem response, to find out how good their hearing was.
